HYPOS project H2-PIMS

Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung is a HYPOS member!

Within the framework of the Hydrogen Power Storage Solutions East Germany hydrogen initiative (HYPOS), we are participating in the establishment of a green hydrogen industry in central and eastern Germany.

In the HYPOS project H2-PIMS, we have set ourselves the goal of developing a Pipeline Integrity Management System (PIMS) to operate natural gas pipelines with hydrogen-rich gases. Along with the development of the PIMS module, an action guideline is being compiled, which will outline how to repurpose existing natural gas transport lines to convey hydrogen-rich gases and even pure hydrogen. Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung’s work focuses on the investigation and qualification of line pipe materials for new sections of pipeline to be laid. The materials for these studies are being provided by Mannesmann Line Pipe. We are analyzing the materials with regard to hydrogen-influenced corrosion. To that end, slow strain rate tensile tests are being conducted to determine the relevant characteristic values of the materials in compressed hydrogen. The tests are being carried out with a strain rate of 2⋅10-6 s-1 and a hydrogen partial pressure of up to 80 bar.

Other projects call for testing the materials under cyclic loads in compressed hydrogen. The project is supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and runs through the end of 2019.
