Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung GmbH was created by the bundling of the research activities of the renowned Mannesmann Forschungsinstitut and the Materials Center of Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH.
Mannesmann Forschungsinstitut (MFI) was already founded in 1934 as a research facility of the Mannesmann Group dedicated to advancing practical applications. The diversification of Mannesmann in the following decades entailed a broadening of the range of tasks performed at the MFI. The main focus of research, however, remained on steel as a material.
The history of the Materials Center in Salzgitter also started at the end of the thirties. The original focus area of "testing and approving" soon evolved into an independent research area dedicated to the optimization and further development of new steel grades.
By amalgamating the two research facilities to form the new Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung GmbH on January 1, 2004 the Salzgitter Group is bundling its research activities in the steel area and thereby enhancing its innovative strength for the future. The Duisburg and Salzgitter locations continue their operations as before. Customers will benefit from this combined strength by greater proximity and a broader range of services and performance.
